Shrinking Tonsils

In the past getting your tonsils out meant a trip to the hospital and a week or two of sore throats and soft foods. Now a new procedure puts an end to all that. A tonsillectomy that doctors and patients say is quick and almost painless.

In just two days homework will be the last thing on Eric's Kassick's mind. This 23-year-old is heading south for spring break. "I'm going to Florida and New Orleans," says Eric.

Before he leaves he needs to take care of his sore throat. "My airway was getting blocked not getting enough air causing me to wake up at night," he says.

How about shrinking the tonsils? That's right, shrinking. Using a radiofrequency probe oral surgeon Mansoor Madani, D.M.D., is going to shrink Eric's swollen tonsils.

"Heat causes the tonsil to shrink rather than cutting it out, all out, and causing bleeding and infection and other problems," says Dr. Madani.

The mild heat is placed in three to four locations in each tonsil. It's held in place for 10 to 15 seconds. Within 10 weeks Eric's tonsils will shrink up to 60 percent. Most patients need just one treatment. Others may need to repeat the procedure.

Dr. Madani says the procedure is fairly painless. So recovery is quick. Jeff Blum had the procedure and agrees. "I went back to school the next day," he says. "It was nothing too bad."

Eric says he had a mild sore throat but could eat just minutes after the procedure and is now ready to enjoy his vacation, pain-free.

Currently Dr. Madani says he is the only one in the world performing tonsillar coblation. It's not yet FDA approved and is not covered by insurance. The cost? About $2,100.
