PHILADELPHIA and BALA CYNWYD, Pa., April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Just when you
think you know your mate well enough to tie the knot, it's not until after the
wedding that you discover the truth about your spouse's bedtime habits.
Over 5600 snoring patients were interviewed and surveyed at the Center for
Corrective Surgery in Bala Cynwyd, PA over a ten-year period. 86% of snoring
men were not aware of their problem or they were in denial. 32% claimed that
snoring was ruining their relationship as well as their sex life. 18% said the
problem had got so bad that they had considered divorce to escape the nightly
drill. "Snoring obviously puts tremendous stress on relationships. In fact,
people who suffer from snoring typically wait about 6-10 years before they do
anything about it," according to Dr. Mansoor Madani, whose research paper was
published recently in the Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. "Usually
the situation gets takes a turn for the worse with the arrival of the first
child! Baby keeps mom up all night and dad doesn't help it either - snoring
above and beyond the cry of the baby," Madani adds.
Married couples lose an average of one hour of sleep per night because of
their partner's snoring problems, a total of at least 365 hours of sleepless
nights per year. No one wants to share a room with this unfortunate person
during family vacations - and sometimes you don't even want to be in the room
next to them either.
Over 70% of patients were sleeping in separate bedrooms. The ratio of men
to women was 8:1. On average, patients were moderately overweight. "We know
that snoring is one of the major signs of a potentially deadly problem known
as sleep apnea, where an individual actually stops breathing in the middle of
the night. This may cause the amount of the oxygen in your body to drop which
can lead to a heart attack, stroke and even sexual dysfunction," says Dr.
Madani.
"What most people don't realize is that snoring is no laughing matter and
denying is not the solution and could, in fact, cost their life. The sooner
you do something about it the safer you are," adds Madani, who is also the
chairman of the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Department at Capital Health
System.
Fortunately, the snoring problem could be corrected in most instances by a
simple procedure, according to Dr. Mansoor Madani, an internationally renowned
surgeon who has modified laser surgery procedures to treat this disorder.
These treatments may involve laser surgery to trim tissues in the roof of the
mouth including the uvula and portion of soft palate, or the use of
radiofrequency to treat enlarged tonsils or nasal turbinates that causes
chronic nasal congestion and snoring. The study showed that these procedures
were effective for treating snoring and milder cases of sleep apnea.
Until death do us apart! "If you snore, death may come earlier than you
expect. Do something about it," Madani recommends.
