New Breakthrough Technique Promises To Put an End To Chronic Nasal Congestion & Snoring!

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Sept. 13, 1999/PRNewswire/ -- The Center For Corrective Surgery announced today the introduction of a new breakthrough technique, which can correct chronic nasal congestion and snoring in less than two minutes. "What is remarkable about this new treatment is that we can actually see the tissue shrinking and the nasal passages opening immediately after the surgery, without a long wait or major surgery," according to Dr. Mansoor Madani, Director of the Center For Corrective Surgery in Philadelphia. "This could be the procedure of the future replacing nasal sprays, decongestants and bandages -- putting an end to many years of suffering for over a billion people all over the globe," adds Dr. Madani.

The procedure is called CoblationTM Channeling and uses very mild heat over the enlarged areas in the nose and throat causing physical reduction and shrinkage of the tissues. "It's like putting a needle in an inflated water balloon -- the CoblationTM wand causes the tissues in its path to shrink and therefore opens up the nasal passage," according to Dr. Madani, who is one of the first doctors in the United States to successfully perform this procedure.

Dr. Madani is an Associate Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Temple University and has treated thousands of patients who suffer from nasal congestion and snoring. In the past, he has performed these procedures using a surgical blade, laser, electrocautery and SomnoplastyTM/SM -- which is a similar radiofrequency technique like CoblationTM but the results are more gradual.

"Although SomnoplastyTM/SM is promising and minimally invasive, it requires multiple treatments and takes between four to eight weeks to see results," according to Dr. Madani who is one of the pioneering surgeons in this field. The advantages of CoblationTM and SomnoplastyTM/SM over conventional procedures include less pain, faster healing and reduced post-operative care. Furthermore, because these procedures can be performed under local instead of general anesthesia, the patient remains awake and the treatment can be performed in the doctor's office rather than in the operating room.

"We believe that CoblationTM and SomnoplastyTM/SM  are promising solutions to patients who are reluctant to try other methods of treatment. We're looking forward to studying the results of these treatments on patients who suffer from snoring, obstructive sleep apnea and chronic nasal congestion," adds Dr. Madani who has been studying and using radiofrequency energy to treat chronic nasal congestion for several years.

Obstructive disorder of the upper airway is a very common problem. Chronic snoring is estimated to affect approximately 40 million Americans. It is caused by relaxed muscles and enlarged structures, creating a partial airway obstruction and loud noise. Nasal obstruction is a common symptom of chronic rhinitis, or runny nose, which affects approximately 50 million Americans.
