Before Intravenous Anesthesia Sedation

  • You may not have anything to eat or drink for eight (8) hours prior to the appointment.
  • No smoking at least 12 hours before surgery. Ideally, cut down or stop smoking as soon as possible prior to the day of surgery.
  • Marijuana must be stopped at least two (2) weeks prior to surgery. In addition, it is critical for your health and well-being that our office staff and the doctors be told about any use of “street drugs” such as: cocaine, heroin, Ecstasy (E), methamphetamine (meth), crystal meth, “designer drugs,” etc. or any other recreational drugs before surgery. Please understand that this is not a value judgment about your lifestyle. It is a safety concern about your well-being during surgery and anesthesia.
  • A responsible adult must accompany the patient to the office, remain in the office during the procedure, and drive the patient home so that we can give him/her the appropriate post op instructions as well.
  • A minor patient MUST come with his/her parent or the actual legal guardian who needs to stay in our facility during the procedure.
  • A sedated or anesthetized patient must have their escort's full attention on the way home. A small child SHOULD NOT be here on surgery day unless there is a second adult to supervise the child. The escort's focus must be on helping to safely guide a possible unsteady patient into the house and to bed or sofa.
  • The patient should not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours following the anesthesia experience.
  • Please wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing with sleeves which can be rolled up past the elbow, and low-heeled shoes. Avoids boots or high shoes.
  • Contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures must be removed at the time of surgery.
  • Do not wear lipstick, excessive makeup, or nail polish on the day of surgery.
  • Please remove tongue rings, and protruding facial ornaments before your surgery.
  • If you have an illness such as a cold, sore throat, stomach or bowel upset, please notify the office.
  • If you take routine oral medications, please inform us prior to your surgical date for instructions.
  • A parent or legal guardian must accompany patients under 18 years of age at the time of the initial consult and the surgical procedure.
  • Please contact our office if you have any questions or concerns.
  • To confirm your appointment, please call (610) 667-6161.
  • If you take medications regularly, you should take them with small sips of water at the regular time.
  • You cannot take a taxi home without an escort. It is not adequately safe by our standards.
  • If you have a productive cough and active cold when oral surgery is to be performed, please call the office or come in for evaluation only. if you have any symptoms, as an appointment change may be necessary.
